A maintenance electrician is a professional who provides maintenance for the electrical system in homes or commercial properties. Maintenance electricians perform routine maintenance procedures and repairs that are required due to normal wear on the system. They use testing equipment, problem-solving skills, and their experience to diagnose issues in electrical systems and make the necessary repairs. Their work may include replacing breakers, switches, and wiring.
You can become a maintenance electrician in a few different ways. Some electricians have no formal education beyond high school and learn their craft through apprenticeship, while others graduate from an associate degree program or trade school. Some employers may prefer candidates with the latter, but experience and skill are the most important factors in landing a job. Each state has licensing requirements for electricians that all electricians must complete.
